Music Theory and Arranging Techniques for Folk Harps by Sylvia Woods. Although the title of this book says that it is for folk harps, this treatment of the subject of arranging is good for not only all harps, but for any other instrument as well, in our opinion. Sylvia goes systematically through the whole subject, laying it out clearly for you. In our opinion, if you get this book and learn everything in it, you'll never need to buy harp music again! 40 O'Carolan Tunes For All Harps by Sylvia
Woods, each arranged in two versions, for beginning and more advanced harpers (the two
versions can be played together as a duet). O'Carolan (1670-1738) is the best known of the
ancient Irish harpers. Although blind, he travelled all around Ireland composing
music and playing his harp. He played for the gentry, rather than the common
people, and so his music could be called court or classical Irish music, rather
than folk music. Spiral bound, 112pp. $19

Un y Mwd (In the Mood) by Bethan Bryn. Eleven harp pieces composed in the style of traditional Welsh harp tunes for penillion. These make good pieces for weddings or other occasions, as they are somewhat stately in character. Bethan, by the way, was harpist at Welsh Heritage Week several times, and adjudicates penillion competitions at the Welsh National Eisteddfod in Wales. Medium difficulty, for pedal harp. Pub. The Flowers of Ceiswyn: The Legacy of Edward Jones. Welsh triple harp music arranged for Celtic harp by Anne Kimble Howard. Five pieces: Morfa Rhuddlan (The Red March), Blodeu Ceiswyn (The Flowers of Ceiswyn), Anhawdd Ymadael (Banish Misfortune), Nos Galan (New Year's Night, also called Deck the Halls), and Codiad yr Hedydd (Rising of the Lark). Edward Jones (1752--1824) published Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards and Cambro-British Melodies, from which these pieces were taken. Keys of B flat, F, and C. Special! Sain Y Werin (trans. Folk Music): 20 traditional Welsh folk tunes arranged for pedal harp and flute (or other C instrument). Most are duo arrangements, except for two harp solos and one flute solo. The pieces are arranged so that they can be played one at a time, or consecutively without stopping (e.g., if being played before a wedding). The book of harp music has three staffs, two for the harp plus a staff showing the C instrument line. There is a separate booklet included for the C instrument. For the price of this book and booklet, $15, we will throw in the companion cassette tape, worth $12. This tape has a complete harp and flute performance, plus separate harp and flute performances for purposes of rehearsal, or for student practice. This is the first history of the harp in Scotland to be published; it traces the harp from its first appearance on the Pictish stones of the 8th century to the present.
